Nestled in the heart of Lichfield, our History Access Point brings together historical resources from across the county to illuminate the histories of Staffordshire, Lichfield and the county’s residents.

The HAP has table space, physical reference materials and digital resources in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s.
Located on the first floor of St Mary’s Church, Market Square, Lichfield, the HAP is designed to support those interested in, and researching, local and family history. Combining physical resources, such as trade directories, parish records, and electoral registers with free access to a wealth of digital material, including Ancestry, FindMyPast, and the British Newspaper Archive, the HAP is the perfect place for those starting out on their research journey as who are already confident.

For those who would like support in their research, a team of volunteers are on hand every Tuesday morning to assist with source guidance. So far, the volunteers and resources have helped people trace their ancestors, discover the history of their home, and reveal what their businesses were in bygone centuries.. If you’d like to share your enthusiasm for family and local history with the HAP’s visitors, we welcome volunteers throughout the year. To get involved, email sro.volunteers@staffordshire.gov.uk.

The Family History section is well stocked with reference books.
We’d love to hear what visitors and researchers would like to see in the HAP – talks, workshops, networking events etc. so please do let us know your thoughts by emailing our Community History Development Officer hannah.grangesales@staffordshire.gov.uk.
The HAP is open access, so no booking is required to delve into its free resources. If you would like to access online resources, computers can be booked via Staffordshire libraries.
