Construction begins

Construction work started in early February 2023 with PaveAways Ltd taking over the site. A new perimeter fence has been installed and construction work has begun across all parts of the site. The final stage of archaeology was completed with no new discoveries. You can view footage of the early 2022 archaeological dig here.

Work has progressed quickly with renovations in the William Salt Library revealing more historical features including some previously hidden Edwardian & Victorian wallpaper.

The inside of the record office building is looking unrecognisable as remodelling work has opened up the space by removing walls. Outside ground work has begun for the foundations of a new strongroom extension that will allow us to expand our archival storage and keep documents safe in ideal conditions.

Look out for future updates as the construction work continues and we move closer to the opening of the Staffordshire History Centre.
